What Is llms.txt?

AISOS Glossary

llms.txt is a plain-text file placed at the root of your domain (e.g., yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that provides Large Language Models with a structured, machine-readable summary of your brand, your expertise, and your content. Think of it as robots.txt for the AI era — except instead of telling crawlers what to ignore, it tells AI models what to understand about you.

The concept emerged from a simple observation: AI models are making decisions about which brands to cite, recommend, and reference — but they have no standardized way to understand what a brand actually does. They rely on scattered web content, third-party mentions, and training data that may be outdated or incomplete.

llms.txt solves this by giving you direct control over how AI models perceive your brand. It is one of the most impactful AEO actions a business can take, and it takes less than an hour to implement.

The llms.txt Specification

The llms.txt file follows a simple, human-readable format that is also easily parseable by AI models. While the specification is still evolving, the core structure includes:

  • Brand identity: Company name, tagline, and a concise description of what you do — written for machines, not marketing
  • Domain expertise: The topics and domains where your brand has authority. This helps AI models know when to consider your content as a credible source
  • Key content: URLs to your most important, authoritative content — the pages you want AI to prioritize when referencing your brand
  • Contact and attribution: How AI should attribute content to your brand, including preferred citation formats
  • Content policies: Guidelines for how AI may use your content — permissions, restrictions, and preferred contexts

The beauty of llms.txt is its simplicity. You don't need a developer to create one. You don't need a CMS plugin. You need a text editor and a clear understanding of your brand positioning. The hard part is not the implémentation — it is the strategic thinking about what you want AI to know about you.

That said, a poorly written llms.txt is worse than no llms.txt at all. If your file is vague, generic, or inaccurate, you are actively misinforming AI models about your brand.

Why llms.txt Matters for AI Visibility

Without llms.txt, AI models construct their understanding of your brand from whatever they can find: your website content, third-party reviews, social media mentions, press articles, and whatever else was in their training data. You have zero control over this narrative.

With llms.txt, you provide a canonical, authoritative source of truth. When an AI model encounters your domain, it can reference your llms.txt to understand:

  • What your brand actually does (not what a 2-year-old blog post said you did)
  • Which topics you are an authority on (so it knows when to cite you)
  • Which content is most current and accurate (so it doesn't reference outdated pages)
  • How you want to be attributed (so citations are correct and on-brand)

This is not theoretical. AI models that access the web in real-time (Perplexity, ChatGPT with browsing, Google AI Overviews) are already looking for signals about source authority. llms.txt provides the clearest possible signal. It is the difference between hoping AI understands your brand and telling AI what your brand is.

How to Write an Effective llms.txt

Writing an effective llms.txt requires a different mindset than writing marketing copy. You are not trying to persuade — you are trying to inform a machine. Here are the principles:

  • Be specific, not aspirational: "AI visibility platform for mid-market B2B companies" is better than "We help businesses grow." AI models need precision.
  • List concrete expertise: Don't say "digital marketing." Say "Answer Engine Optimization, schema markup implémentation, AI citation tracking, semantic content architecture." Specificity helps AI match your brand to relevant queries.
  • Prioritize ruthlessly: Include only your 10-20 most authoritative, current pages. AI models that reference outdated or low-quality pages will associate that quality with your brand.
  • Update regularly: Your llms.txt should reflect your current positioning, offerings, and best content. A stale file is a missed opportunity.
  • Use clear, factual language: Avoid jargon, buzzwords, and subjective claims. "Founded in 2024, serving 200+ clients" is more useful to AI than "industry-leading" or "best-in-class."

AISOS generates and maintains llms.txt files as part of our core platform. We monitor how AI models interpret your file and optimize it based on real citation data.

llms.txt vs. Other Machine-Readable Files

Your website already has several machine-readable files. How does llms.txt fit in?

  • robots.txt: Tells search engine crawlers which pages to access or ignore. It controls crawling, not understanding. llms.txt controls understanding.
  • sitemap.xml: Lists all pages for search engines to discover and index. It is a map of your content. llms.txt is a summary of your identity and authority.
  • Schema markup (JSON-LD): Structured data embedded in individual pages. Provides granular, page-level machine understanding. llms.txt provides site-level brand understanding.
  • humans.txt: A fun convention for crediting the people behind a website. llms.txt is its AI equivalent — but with strategic implications.

These files are complementary, not competing. A comprehensive AI visibility strategy uses all of them. But if you had to choose one action to improve your AI visibility today, llms.txt would be the highest-impact, lowest-effort option. It can be deployed in minutes and immediately starts influencing how AI models perceive your brand.

The Adoption Curve: Why Early Implémentation Wins

As of today, fewer than 1% of websites have a llms.txt file. That means 99% of brands are leaving their AI narrative entirely to chance. For the brands that implement it now, the benefits are outsized:

  • First-mover citation advantage: When AI models find a clear llms.txt, they are more likely to use that brand as a reference point in the category. Being first means being the default.
  • Training data influence: Content that is well-structured and clearly attributed today will be part of AI training data tomorrow. The llms.txt you publish now shapes how future models understand your brand.
  • Competitive intelligence: If your competitors don't have llms.txt and you do, AI models have clearer information about you than about them. This creates asymmetric visibility.

The adoption curve for llms.txt will follow the same pattern as robots.txt and sitemap.xml. It starts as optional, becomes best practice, and eventually becomes expected. The businesses that wait for it to become "standard" will miss the window where early adoption creates disproportionate advantage.

AISOS clients get llms.txt deployment as part of their onboarding. We don't wait for the industry to catch up — we build the infrastructure that defines where the industry is going.
