What Is Link Building?

AISOS Glossary

Link building is the practice of acquiring hyperlinks from external websites to your own (backlinks) to increase your site's authority, trustworthiness, and search engine rankings. Since Google's founding, backlinks have been a core ranking signal — essentially, each link from another site is a "vote of confidence" in your content.

But link building in 2026 is not what it was in 2010. The era of mass directory submissions, link exchanges, and PBNs (private blog networks) is over. Modern link building is about earning genuine endorsements from authoritative sources through high-quality content, relationships, and expertise.

More importantly, link building now has a dual purpose: it still powers search engine rankings, but it also influences AI visibility. AI models evaluate source authority partly based on the same trust signals that backlinks represent. A site with strong backlinks from trusted sources is more likely to be cited by AI answer engines than an equivalent site with no external endorsements.
